Odin Biron, American Star ofStage, TV

It isalmost aholiday fairy tale.

Just one year ago, Odin Lund Biron attended aNew Year's party hosted bythe Satirikon Theater. Anactor inthe company, hehad begun tofeel itwas time for achange. Hecould hear the home fires calling.

“This was myfirst big adventure,“ hesaid about his six-year sojourn inRussia aswerecently sat inacoffee shop onTverskaya Ulitsa, „Ididn't want ittobethe last.”

Biron, who is27years old, was born inDuluth, Minnesota. Hegrew upwith aninterest intheater and studied musical theater atthe University ofMichigan atAnn Arbor. Adesire todosomething exotic (“London seemed too accessible”) brought him tothe Moscow Art Theater School inthe fall of2005tostudy with agroup from the Connecticut-based Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. But ashewas preparing toleave, ateacher approached him and asked whether hehad thought about staying on. Hehadn't, but the idea stuck. ByFebruary 2006 hewas hanging out inMoscow, teaching English tosurvive, and preparing toenter afull-fledged, four-year acting course atthe Art Theater.

As ithappened, Biron applied tothe class headed byKonstantin Raikin, one ofRussia's most accomplished actors.

The young American went tothe audition “shaking like aleaf“ but was relieved tofind Raikin “incredibly warm and friendly.“ Showing off afine sense ofhumor and paradox, Biron performed Mikhail Lermontov's poem “No, I'm not Byron, I'm Another” and anexcerpt from Samuel Beckett's „Waiting for Godot.” Hechose the latter because his Russian was bad, and Beckett's „silent monologue” meant hecould show off his stage presence and physical abilities.

Biron not only graduated from Raikin's class in2009, and was not only given the rare honor ofbeing invited tojoin the company atRaikin's Satirikon, hewas promised atop role inanew production ofanAlexander Ostrovsky play that Raikin put out under the title of“Money.“ Biron had made extraordinary progress with his Russian bythen and began getting his first rave reviews.

Cut back now tothat New Year's party. Ithad been decided. The Russia experiment was over. America was calling. Biron's friend and colleague the director Viktor Ryzhakov was encouraging him togo. Many Americans who have studied and practiced theater inRussia have found itdifficult toadjust toatotally different system and mentality upon returning tothe States.

„Everybody knew. Itwas myplan togo,” Biron now says with awarm but ironic smile.

That irony iswell placed. Biron never went home, and 2011 was surely the most eventful year ofhis life.

Not only did heopen inacentral role inanother new show atthe Satirikon inOctober “Pushkin's Little Tragedies,” directed byRyzhakov but hejoined the cast ofthe popular television satire “Interns.“

Biron admits hedoesn't even own atelevision set. But heisimpressed with the small creative group that films and puts “Interns“ onthe air. They, too, appear satisfied with him, for just recently they renewed his contract for the coming season. Moreover, hehas signed ontoact inhis first full-length feature film.

Aside from his work atthe Satirikon and onvarious soundstages, Biron has been active inthe creation ofsome successful independent theater productions. Working with Cazimir Liske, anAmerican colleague and friend who studied atthe Art Theater School, hehas starred inproductions ofShel Silverstein's children's story “Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back“ inRussian, and Woody Allen's “Riverside Drive“ inEnglish. Both have played atvarious venues around town.

“Caz was amajor influence onmejoining Raikin's course,“ Biron explains. And itwas Liske who came upwith the idea ofdoing aperformance ofthe Shel Silverstein piece for the pair's final acting exam atthe Art Theater.

“Amid all the heavy Dostoevsky things people were doing, there wewere, two idiot Americans doing this ridiculous version of'Lafcadio.'“

It was such asuccess that the pair realized they „had tocontinue doing it.”

That wasn't all they did together, however. Over the summer following graduation they did the Jack Kerouac thing and hit the road inAmerica. „Wetraveled all over the States bytrain, getting toknow our homeland,” Biron says. „Plus westudied our lines for'Lafcadio.'”

That project, once itopened, brought about aninvitation toperform „Riverside Drive.”

„That was interesting toCaz and me,” Biron declares, „because wehadn't performed inEnglish for along time. Itwas arough process, but weall respected one another enough tokeep atit. Weworked onitfor ayear.”

That little detail rehearsing ashow for ayear speaks volumes about the differences that exist between Russian and American theater. It's adifference Biron relishes from his Russian standpoint. Hecalls the ability tothrow oneself into aproject and work atitaslong asittakes “one ofthe sweetest things about Russian theater and

culture.“

“That doesn't exist inthe United States, where you have your mandatory breaks and days off,“ hesays. “Ilove itwhen artists get together and sweat and get pissed off ateach other. There's something very right about that.”

He didn't say sospecifically, but this description may well apply toBiron's experience atthe Satirikon. Raikin's theater isarguably the most intense, energetic and physically accomplished dramatic theater inMoscow, and that achievement does not come about for nothing.

But Biron himself represents another, highly intriguing aspect ofthe Satirikon. Over the years, Raikin has put together acollection offine actors that now includes three nontraditional company members.

Grigory Siyatvinda, anAfrican-Russian who spent afew years asachild with his parents inZambia, has been astar atthe Satirikon for many years. Also joining the troupe recently was Yelizaveta Martinez-Cardenas, anactress ofRussian, Mexican and Sudanese descent. Martinez-Cardenas was aclassmate ofBiron's atthe Art Theater. Biron, however, isthe only troupe member who did not grow upinRussia and whose native tongue isnot Russian.

The actor says hehas never heard Raikin say anything about the cultural diversity hecultivates athis theater. „Ithink it's just interesting tohim,” Biron opines. „He's attracted totalent.”

As for the decision togohome ayear ago and the more fateful decision not tofollow through with that Biron admits there was “anelement offear” inhis planning toleave. What ifhewere towait solong hecould nolonger fit inathome?

But with his star rising inRussia, Biron now has more immediate concerns like how tosqueeze infilm shoots with rehearsals and performances atthe Satirikon, while making sure toleave time for the regular shoots of“Interns.” This might just beadream life for anactor.
